LANSING, Mich. — There was pizza for a good cause Thursday on the lawn of the Michigan State Capitol. The Michigan Education Trust hosted its 10th annual pizza night to raise money for the Fostering Futures Scholarship Trust Fund, which provides scholarships to young people who have experienced foster care and are enrolled in colleges and universities. from Michigan.
“This afternoon we are raising money to help support our Fostering Futures Scholarship Fund which the state supports to help foster children achieve their educational goals by going to college,” said Elizabeth Hertel, director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. .
Over the past 10 years, over $1.3 million has been raised for the scholarship fund.
“Just by buying a slice of pizza and a ticket here, which is only $10, you have the opportunity to support every dollar that goes to college scholarships,” said Michigan State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks.
On average, only 3% of former youth in foster care graduate from college, according to the National Foster Youth Institute. Scholarships supported by these annual fundraisers can be used for tuition, room and board, books, and supplies, among other things.
