Royals Pizza Grand Rapids is closing permanently

Just months after reopening with a new concept, a restaurant in the East Hills neighborhood of Grand Rapids is closing for good.

What happened to the royals in Grand Rapids?

In June, we told you that the Royals in the East Hills area of Grand Rapids would be temporarily closing.

The restaurant got off to a rocky start, taking over the former Johnny B’z space at 701 Wealthy in March 2020, just at the start of the pandemic. The initial concept of Royals was a restaurant serving comfort food classics.

The Lee family, owners of All In Hospitality Group LLC, also own neighboring restaurants Donkey, Hancock and Winchester.

At the time the Lee family swore Royals would reopen, saying:

Our intention is to re-tool, re-evaluate and re-conceptualize to help relaunch Royals later this summer/fall.

Royals reopened in September as a pizzeria and sports bar. The menu included wings, oven roasted meatballs, fried calamari, salads, sandwiches and homemade pies.

They shared the news of Facebook’s shutdown, saying:

The past 2.5 years have been a struggle. With our grand opening falling on the same day we were mandated to close (due to COVID), we had a rocky start. We’ve limped through the pandemic, only to fall victim to a massive shortage of hospitality workers, supply chain issues and rising costs for everything restaurant-related… Earlier this summer, we paused to rethink… While this change was promising, it wasn’t enough to move Royals in the right direction.

They say the decision to close Royals was not easy and they are heartbroken to let it go, but they will continue to work hard to ensure their other businesses thrive.
