Uber Eats driver delivers pizza and drives New York woman’s dog, owner says

FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (WPIX) — An Uber Eats driver is accused of running away with a New York woman’s dog after dropping off pizza over the weekend.

Surveillance video shows a man entering an elevator with a dog on Saturday evening. He goes to the hall and heads for his car, the dog in his arms, before leaving. Owner Melanie Polanco of Brooklyn said Ella, a 6-month-old Cocker Poodle mix, probably walked out when she opened the door.

Polanco didn’t realize that Ella disappeared right away; she thought the puppy was in another room. Then Polanco realized Ella was out when she opened the door for her pizza.

“I was crying. I was devastated; she left. I couldn’t eat or sleep that night,” she said. “She’s probably scared alone.”

His worst fears came true when his super-supervisor showed him the building’s surveillance video. She called 911 and filed a police report. Polanco also filed a complaint with Uber and sent them the video.

An Uber rep called her late Monday night and told her they had spoken to the driver, who claims he doesn’t have Ella, but Polanco thinks otherwise. She told WPIX that she thinks the motive is the money.

“I don’t think he came to steal a dog, but he saw her. She’s very cute,” Polanco said. “It’s a crime, it’s theft. She is worth $5,000. It could be a big larceny. I don’t know what will happen, I only think of Ella. I need Ella back.

Flyers for Ella now adorn the building’s walls and doors, but with Ella gone for more than 48 hours, Polanco fears it’s a race against time.

“That’s my baby,” Polanco said. “This is my first pet, in fact, my first dog. For this to happen, it breaks my heart.

A spokesperson for Uber Eats said Polanco’s claim “is deeply troubling and unacceptable.”

“We continue to review this and have removed this driver’s access to the platform. We stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation,” the spokesperson said.
